Just think, you get to inherit all that!
What happens when you inherit a house only to discover that the house is stuffed with “priceless treasures” or as in our recent case, junk?
We recently purchased a house only to discover just such a situation. The previous owners had kept the outside of the house in great condition but once you opened the door or flipped up the garage door, there it was.junk.everywhere. They left little paths throughout the house so they could navigate into each room, but other then that it was FULL. We had known they were hoarders, but not to the extent that we found inside the house.
If you are facing this situation perhaps calling us to sell the house “as is” would be a better option for you. We have seen our fair share of these houses and they don’t intimidate us one bit!
How do we handle this type of situation which happens all too often? We typically rent a very large dumpster or two and begin the process of just tossing everything into the dumpster. We don’t actually go through the stuff, we just haul it out to the dumpster and toss. We do keep an eye out for anything we might salvage but generally everything goes. We also have a supply of face mask respirators and gloves to wear as well as clean clothing to change into before going home. You never know what you might bring home with you, so we take these protections. It can take weeks for our crews to clear out a property. It helps to open windows and run fans once things are removed but you will probably find lingering aromas. You might discover rodents or bugs, rotting floors, damaged plumbing, dangerous electric, mold, and damaged walls. All this leads to costly repairs. In one case we actually ended up removing all the walls down to the studs and even some of those! You never know what you will find once everything is cleaned out!
Here’s another example of an unusual hoarder. We purchased a beautiful home that had been abandoned for years after the previous owner passed away. In this particular case, they had been avid gardeners and the plants and trees had taken over the property and had even grown into the roof, decks, house and more – it was a tangled mess of a jungle. We spent weeks cleaning up the exterior of the property, removing trees, branches, plants before we could actually see the house! We discovered beautiful plants and shrubs, pathways, garden art, and ponds under all the mess. You could say the “garden” was a hoarder.
